A peaceful and prosperous New Year to you and your family. Now that the holiday planning, the shopping, the festivities and surprises are all over, it’s time to think about the coming year. If you’re like me you may have goals for your health and fitness, your budgeting, travel and home improvements.

Last fall I started a new garden in my landscape. It’s a small sitting area surrounded by a Potager. A Potager is a garden style originating in France, which combines vegetables, herbs and flowers. The basic structure of my Potager was installed in the fall and I can’t wait to have the finishing touches added this spring. There will be intensely fragrant roses from David Austin and a variety of herbs including Thyme, Rosemary and Lavender. Raised beds will feature salad vegetables and a lovely fig tree is espaliered against one wall. Can you imagine the pleasure of sitting on the antique bench of a summer evening surrounded by fragrance, with bees buzzing in the roses and tomatoes ripening on the vine? When the garden is competed I’ll share some photos here.

A question I am often asked is, “What is the best time of year for landscaping my home?” There is no fast and easy answer. In general, the design process should begin long before you expect to start enjoying your garden. Fall and winter are ideal times to plan for a spring installation. Structures, such as swimming pools require a longer lead time than simple planting plans. In many municipalities there are permitting requirements that require lengthy board review of plans and documents. So be sure to allow adequate time before installation.

But, life being unpredictable, we sometimes need to move quickly. A friend asks us to host a garden wedding, a new wing is added to the house, or our new house is finally completed and there is no time for an extended planning process. A large and long established firm, Wallace Landscape Associates has the resources to act quickly when called upon. Our Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey landscape architects bring years of experience to the design and installation process. Staff support allows for rapid turn around of presentation plans and cost estimates.

As for the actual installation, it can begin at any time. Of course weather has a role in installation. Rain, snow, frozen soil, or extreme drought may impact the progress of an installation. Wallace Associates’ landscape architects, experienced in the Mid-Atlantic Region, have worked through all types of weather conditions. Well-equipped installers and reliable sub-contractors minimize any delays caused by inclement weather and projects move ahead quickly when conditions improve. These are a few of the many reasons to work with a firm that is large enough to bring adequate resources to the table. In Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey, The name Wallace Landscape Associates is known for creative design and timely installation of the highest quality.
